Welcome back to the second part of our Development Diary series on the Birth Haven project details.
Tonight, we’ll take a virtual tour of our birth centre from first contact to bittersweet farewell.
First step is contacting our friendly staff by phone, email or instant message to have a chat and arrange a personalised package of care.
Next, you meet your potential midwife for a free consultation, further explanation of the service and to see if they’re a good match for you and your family.
Then, you confirm with Birth Haven staff the package of care; flexible payment options will be available.
Antenatal appointments, blood tests, or scans according to NICE guidelines will take place in the comfy Birth Haven clinic, where childcare facilities will be available for your convenience. Our midwives will ensure you will be seen quickly. When planning a homebirth, appointments from 36 weeks will be at your home.
Your antenatal appointments can coincide with your holistic therapy sessions with your pregnancy masseuse, chiropractor, accupuncturist, reflexologist, doula, herbalist etc. These appointments will be arranged to suit your schedule. You will be able to book your birth prep GentleBirth weekend in Birth Haven. We’ll even have pregnancy yoga classes on site.
If your midwife suspects that you have a minor illness, they will Skype a General Practitioner during your appointment. This GP can prescribe medicine and send the script electronically to you to be filled at a chemist nearby. If you’d like to see a consultant, you can access one for free at your maternity hospital through the Mother and Infant Care Act. Your midwife will engage with the wider team and help you plan in case of a pregnancy complication.
If you choose to birth at the Birth Haven, just give your midwife a ring when labour starts. Your midwife will meet you at the Birth Haven and do a full assessment. A second midwife will be ready to provide continuous support. You can birth in 5 star luxury with the full attention of two midwives. If you choose to birth at home, you will have the same personal care from two midwives. You can birth how you’re most comfortable, in the water or using one of our many labour support tools.
Pain management in labour is essential and you will learn many coping strategies during your pregnancy. Entonox (gas and air) will be available in both birth settings. Other pain medications will be available in the Birth Haven, excluding epidural. Through our experience we have learned that birth happens best when you’re able to move, leading to a more positive outcome.
Should an emergency occur during labour at the Birth Haven, your midwife will immediately implement emergency skills, most exactly the same as hospital staff would do in an emergency. If needed or requested by you, your midwife will transfer you to a maternity hospital using our custom ambulance available on site 24/7. Transfer times are cut in half because of this innovation compared to homebirth.
After the lovely birth of your newborn in Birth Haven, you can stay for as long as you need to get back on your feet. Your midwife will continue your postnatal care at home for the first week or more and you can come to our postnatal clinic for any reason. We will also have breastfeeding groups, monthly birth club meetings, and toddler mornings for peer to peer support in Birth Haven.
